In this piece, I played with combining part of a photo of my dog Frida with type to create a whole image. To bring cohesion to the design, I chose to repeat the phrase “a toddler in a dog suit,” a description I’ve heard about English bull terrier. The photo shows Frida in shallow water with her reflection rippling around her.

The textures of my dog and her reflection posed a challenge as I worked on my design. I gave them different treatments to help imply their unique characteristics. I used lines of type for the ripples and outline Frida’s body as opposed to filling her in completely. The type-heavy ripples and white space of the body brought balance to the composition.
